you can cut trees, rock, fiber and other plants

Stone

Pick up chunks with "E"
Fiber

(Harvest with "E")
Killed animals give meat and leather

(Loot the bloodbag with "E")

For protection you can craft some basic armor and tools (press <TAB>) and if you don't have materials click "crafting" in upper menu to access overall blueprints
